Sunday Morning Time Capsule

Hello all! Welcome to the this week’s feature of Sunday Morning Time Capsule which is a weekly feature here at Critically Country. In this feature I do a throwback spotlight on a song, album or subject. I say spotlight instead of review because I won’t be giving grades for this feature just discussing the piece of work. Nostalgia can be a powerful thing so hopefully you all enjoy this piece as much as I do. I am happy to take requests for the Time Capsule if you have any so speak up if you do.

Last week on the Sunday Morning Time Capsule we went back to 2012 for Taylor Swift’s song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” This week we go to 2009 to Matt Kennon’s top 40 hit “The Call.” For those of you that don’t know who Matt Kennon is, I don’t blame you. This was the only one of his songs that charted and that was 7 years ago. This song is an extremely powerful song which stresses the importance that a phone call can have on a person’s life. It may seem like just a phone call but, to the person on the receiving end it may mean a lot. The song begins with a man about to commit suicide. He has already written the note and had his finger on the trigger when he gets a phone call from a friend. The friend invites him to the lake for the weekend and tells him that the girl he has a crush on is coming and is excited to see him.

The next verse of the song tells the story of two 18 year old’s who let a kiss go to far and it lead to a pregnancy. The boyfriend convinces the girl to have an abortion however, when she is in the doctor’s office he calls her and tells her that he was wrong about everything and he wants to have this child with her and marry her. She begins to cry after he tells her this because she didn’t want to go through with it. The song ends with the message that if someone you know is going through something or weighing on your mind just give them a call. It may not seem like much to you but, it could mean the world to them so make that call.

I personally think this is a really beautiful song. Matt Kennon doesn’t have the most pleasant voice in the world but, with this song his voice works. This would be Kennon’s final charting single.
