Nearly four years since Maddie and Tae released their debut single “Girl in a Country Song,” the duo is back with a lead single for their upcoming sophomore album.
Maddie and Tae’s debut album Start Here was a fantastic album that could legitimately be referred to as pop-country. To make it even more impressive, the duo co-wrote every single song on the album.
What Maddie and Tae bring to the table are witty, heartfelt country songs that blend traditional with the contemporary similarly to what Scotty McCreery does but with sharper songwriting.
“Friends Don’t” is more contemporary than what you would find on Start Here but lead singles are typically more pop and there is still steel guitar and banjo. The song is about two friends that are clearly in love no matter what they try to tell themselves.
Friends don’t behave the way that these two do around each other and feel the way that they do. “Drive a little too slow, take the long way home, we do but friends don’t.”
Count myself as a real Maddie and Tae fan. We all know how difficult it can be for females to gain any traction on country radio but hopefully the song does well enough that we can get a new album.
